James Frey: How Many Pieces?

James Frey is the bestselling author from Ohio of Queen Oprah's recent pick, A Million Little Pieces, his so-called "non-fiction" memoir. Interestingly, it turns out he lied to make himself seem worse than he really was, and the extent of his fabricated depravity is part of what drew Oprah to his book.

Here's what I'm wondering: Why are people tempted to embellish their lives so that they seem like troublemakers? Do your friends ever exaggerate their own histories like Frey did, skewing it negatively in the re-telling? Why is it so cool to be bad in our culture?

I pray this whole scandal leads Frey to see that the only person who can repair a shattered life, whether it's been broken into a million little pieces or only into a dozen, is not himself or Oprah, but the Broken Man Himself -- Jesus of Nazareth.

We try to respect experience without respecting our elders. If I can prove that I've had experience with the dark side of life, then I have achieved respectability through experience, without having to be old.

Culture is silly.

Hmmm...Very interesting...This lack of respect for the wisdom of the elderly and adulation of those who dabble in the dark are definitely two godless aspects of western culture ... thanks for your insight.

I have just finished posting my entry today on the value of James Frey's books. Thought I would do some blog-browsing on the topic.

I hope you have a chance to visit my blog--to see that there is something bigger about this controversy than embellishments. While I agree with you that our culture is silly (at times...many times!), what is not silly, is the heart ache that millions of families suffer each day because they love an addict.

As a Christian, I believe I am compelled to comment on anyone...with compassion, mercy, grace...and remembering the forgiveness I have been afforded. I share your hope (let's all pray) that James Frey, and many other lost souls will come to know, that no matter level of depravity....sin seperates us from God. You were eloquent in writing... Jesus was missing in A Million Little Pieces. Let's pray too, that Jesus will strengthen those who are waiting for their prodigals to return home; providing the only peace available for both addict and those who love them through the wait.

Just bringing another dimension to the topic.
