Favorite genres?

Camy here! I was thinking today about my favorite genre. I read a lot of different genres, but I tend to gravitate toward Regency romances, contemporary romances, and romantic suspense novels.

I always wonder why certain genres appeal to me more than others. After all, it's not like I'm remotely British, but I love British settings. And I'm a complete wimp and would be the WORST romantic suspense heroine EVER. Yet I love those books. (I am a romantic, which I guess explains why I love romances. :)

So do you know why you like certain genres more than others?

I love to read any genre too, but it seems I prefer historicals and speculative fiction more. I can try to explain why: Historical romances take place in a time(depending on how far back), where love was at least remotely real, there was a certain innocence there and it seemed to be much simpler times.

Speculative fiction asks the "what if" questions and these are books like the ones Octavia Butler writes. It just takes me to another place and makes me think.

Some contemporary writers I love are V.C. Andrews, Christopher Pike, Dean Koontz, and contemporary African American novels.

That's a great point, there is a sort of innocence in historical romances that is appealing. As for speculative fiction, I downloaded an excerpt of The Black Prism that's been interesting because I'm trying to figure out the world of the story.

I really truly don't know why I like to read romances. I guess I am sort of a romantic, but only when it comes to other peoples lives. I've decided that I never want to marry. (and, yes, I know my opinion will probably change sometime in the future:P) I prefer the romances where the couple gets married, not for love, but for convienience, and then falls in love with each other. <3
